The RYA Start Yachting course is a 2 day introductory course for complete beginners. Tuition is on board a cruising yacht and by the end of the course you will have experienced steering a yacht, sail handling, rope work and have an awareness of safety on board.

The Start Yachting course begins on a Friday evening giving you the chance to get settled in to life onboard before setting sail the next day. You are expected to stay onboard for the duration of the course and all of your meals are provided. This course will have you working with your other crew members to sail the yacht safely while experiencing the beautiful scenery of the local rivers and coast.

The RYA Competent Crew course is a 5 day course for beginners or those wishing to build on the skill they learnt during the RYA Start Yachting course. It is aimed at people who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. Most courses start in the evening to give the new crew a chance to settle in and find their way around the boat before setting sail the next day. The instructor will give a full safety briefing before the first passage. Virtually the whole course is hands on. You are the crew and without you the sails will not go up and the boat will not be steered!

RYA Day Skipper Sailing practical course is for aspiring skippers who have some yachting experience and have Day Skipper Theory or knowledge of navigation to a similar standard.

Have spent 5 days aboard a yacht
Have logged 100 nautical miles
Logged 4 night hours

Each skipper will be asked to skipper the yacht on a short passage. The instructor will be on hand to give advice and encouragement, ensuring that your destination is reached safely.

The essential element is that you experience being in charge, taking the credit when all goes well and also being responsible when it does not. The end of each day is usually spent around the chart discussing the passages and gaining from each other’s experience. At the end of the course you should achieve a level of seamanship and boat handling up to the standard required to skipper a small cruising yacht safely by day in tidal waters with which the student is familiar.

An International Certificate of Competence (ICC) is a certificate which is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It may be issued to anyone who has successfully completed certain national boating licenses or has passed an examination to prove the necessary competence for pleasure craft operation.

Upon a successful pass of the test you are required to send an application form, fee and photograph to the RYA and you will receive your licence and is valid for five years. If you are a current member of the RYA your ICC application is free of charge.

Although only guaranteed to be accepted in countries that have adopted the relevant UN Resolution, the ICC is a useful document to carry and will generally be accepted where proof of competence is required.

This particular certificate covers yachts up to 24 metres (which includes Power up to 10 metres)
